Chapter 298: Elrandir
Chapter 298: Elrandir
The mountain was tall. Damian would be a lot happier if he could just fly his way up to the top, but that was not possible.
He had to walk. The same applied to the others who were with him.
"Why does this mage live in such remote place?" Cassia asked.
She was worried because the climb required a lot of physical work, and her sister, Nessia, was not in a good shape.
Mary, the one who knew the mage said, "He is a retired mage, that’s why. If he stayed in a place where everyone could go to, then everyone would be asking for his services."
The mage knew Mary and her family, and that was the only reason he would be willing to help them. Well, that was what they hoped for.
There was a world where they did all of that just for the mage to say no and not help them. Damian didn’t even want to think about that.
They followed a cobblestone path. None of them knew if the mage was the one who made that path, but it was the easiest way to traverse, as the other parts of the mountain were steep and dangerous.
At one point, Damian tried to use his Telekinesis to fly just to be sure, but the results were just like Mary had told him. It was impossible to fly.
The higher they climbed, the harder it was to breath, and the colder it was. Damian didn’t have a problem with any of that, but the others were not as resistant as he was, and they started to slow down.
Damian and the others spent a whole day climbing the mountain. They eventually stopped to set up camp. Rest was needed, as well as eating. It was also not a good idea to travel during night.
Everyone was way better at making camp, and with the supplies they brought, the camp was easily set with tents for them to sleep and a campfire to warm their bodies and cook their food.
A friendly camping vibe fell upon the group, and they started drinking. Damian drank a lot of wine. His voice grew louder, and he was starting to make some stupid jokes, which made the group laugh.
Moments like that calmed everyone. They were on edge during the whole journey, and it was finally time for them to reach their destination. Cassia was excited and scared at the same time.
"Do you think the mage will help us sis?" Nessia asked, "Mary said that he is retired, so I think it will be hard for us to convince him..."
Nessia knew their chance of success was low, but Cassia was there to reassure her.
"We’ll find an answer tomorrow. I am here, and I will do anything I can to help you."
They were bound by love, and their relationship was unbreakable, unshakable, eternal. Cassia and Nessia were in that mission together, and they would only stop after finding a cure to Nessia’s problem.
The following day was the same. After cleaning their camp, they started to climb the mountain again. Nothing happened during the way up, and there was no sign of danger, which was good.
Damian was always focused on his surroundings, trying to spot any sign of danger. A remote place like that usually had beasts, but the place was clear of danger. He attributed that to the mage living there.
’This mage certainly keeps his territory safe,’ thought Damian.
It took them one more day to finally reach their destination. At the top of the mountain stood a comfy wooden cabin.
The cabin had a fence around it, and a personal farm containing not only food but magical herbs that the mage certainly used.
"This is it," Mary said, "Let me knock on the door."
Mary was the one who knew the mage, so she wanted to be the one knocking on the door. Damian knew nothing about the mage or if he was powerful enough to fight against him, so having Mary go first was not a bad idea.
She walked over toward the wooden door, and knocked a few times. The place was silent, and no one answered the door.
"Is he even here?" Damian said.
They were outside, waiting for the mage to answer the door. The sun was setting, and the cold was starting to become unbearable.
A warm place was all they needed, and after three minutes, an old man answered the door. He was wearing long fur robes. The hair of the man was long and messy, just like his beard.
"Mary? Mary?" the man said, his voice of disbelief, "Are you really here?"
Mary was emotional. The mage had been a friend of her and her family for years. He was like her grandfather.
There were times when Mary’s family was struggling both financially and with problems that required the combat powers of a mage. Elrandir was the one who saved them in the time of need.
"Elrandir, it’s been a long time," Mary said, tears streaming down her face.
"Come in," Elrandir said looking at the others, "All of you, come in."
Damian was analyzing the mage called Elrandir since the moment he saw him. It was hard to tell how strong he was, but a mage, especially an old one, had to be strong.
They went inside their cabin. The place looked bigger than what Damian had expected. It had everything a person would need to live there.
Elrandir’s life was much easier because of his magic too. He could do things other people could not.
"So why did you move to this place, Elrandir?" Mary asked.
Everyone sat around a wooden table, and Elrandir came with a cup of tea for each one of them. He explained the reason to why he was there.
"This place gives me the peace I need for my research. I might be retired, but a mage is always seeking knowledge," Elrandir said.
Damian took the lead to talk with Elrandir. "We have a problem, and we need your help."
