Chapter 323: Finale Is Upon Us

Chapter 323: Finale Is Upon Us

Jason had returned and judging from his control over the crows, he must have honed his skills to a fine degree because no one else could explain what was happening.

But for some reason, it looks like Jason predicted everything Chronos had anticipated or he wouldn’t be a step ahead.

He knew Clementine was captured yet didn’t rush to save her. Instead, he chose to communicate it with Sam, who had a lower chance of saving her.

There was no way that Sam could defeat the current creatures surrounding Chronos so was Jason setting up?

It was assumed that the Nexus was Jason’s special ability that he had awoken but that wasn’t the case.

[[What do you wish to do now, Jason?]]

Chronos questioned him but Jason, who had ripped open the corpse of the zombies he had just slaughtered to consume the fragments within them.

"It is time, the conditions have been met," Jason responded, the look on his deformed face inexpressive.

[[Are you sure you want to do it?]]

Chronos questioned his host but Jason chuckled at the ridiculousness of the question.

"I can see it all, Chronos. I have seen how it all ends..." Jason muttered with his hand over his eye.

But the moment he removed his hand, his eyes took the colour of a purple glow with his iris taking on a cross-shaped form.

"I know the future..." Jason muttered under his breath and this ironically made sense considering the name, Chronos, was the god of time.

And if Jason had somehow gotten the ability to see the future then there was no telling what could have happened or if the events he could see were limited.

Or if he was speaking metaphorically, that was to be seen but Jason was no longer hiding.

He has made his reemergence known and Chronos has no control of him anymore.

Jason cracked his neck but his eyes reverted to normal.

"It is here..." Jason muttered under his breath, the thing about this unfounded ability was that Chronos couldn’t see what he saw, the ability itself restricted Chronos’ from sharing the same mind with Jason despite Jason having access to his.

And something huge came out of the bushes and Jason instantly turned around to see something that no one had encountered previously before.

It was a bloated zombie but there was something off about it because it looked to be self-aware.

Jason noticed that it had come with these horsemen but it was clearly stronger than them.

"You’re the controller," Jason muttered as he pointed his sword towards it.

The zombie immediately opened its mouth and fired out a strange-coloured fluid in a jet-like manner.

It rushed out like a compressed hose, melting anything in its path but Jason rolled out of the way as it narrowly missed him.

Jason tried to charge towards it but the zombie stomped the ground so hard, that a rock flew into the air and it punched it, sending it flying towards Jason.

The speed it tore through the air was akin to a bullet, it would burrow through his skin if he didn’t avoid it.

Jason’s speed was unreal but the zombie never for once stopped releasing that strange liquid in its stomach, Jason knew it wouldn’t have the ability to keep up in close-range combat and that was why it was keeping him at a range.

But it underestimated Jason, Jason was unlike anything it had encountered and with a single motion of his hand, his sword escaped its fingertips, impaling the zombie in the neck and in the blink of an eye.

Appeared right in front of the zombie, pulling the sword out of its neck and prompting the acidic substance to spill all over itself/

The knees buckled and dropped to the ground, kneeling right in front of Jason.

"You fail to realize, Chronos... I am beyond your comprehension..." Jason said, looking right at the zombie-like it acted as a medium to communicate with the original variant of Chronos and he was right.

Without speaking another word, he crushed the skull of the zombie, killing it.

Jason wasn’t sure why this zombie was here but it would have made a lot more sense if it attacked with the horsemen as they would have stood a higher chance at success except the horsemen weren’t even aware that it was within their ranks.

That would make far more sense but Jason had killed all the zombies that could potentially prove to be a threat.

"It is all up to you now..." Jason muttered before consuming the fragment within his grasp.

Bella was with the Specters but there was only one man there, he sat there with her waiting for the others to arrive but for some reason, they never did.

This prompted Bella to wonder who called the meeting in the first place but it wasn’t the man seated here.

"Something is strange..." The man muttered, speaking words that Bella couldn’t utter.

He was the one that held this settlement so he didn’t need to travel, the others were the ones that were supposed to come meet him here but they were nowhere to be seen.

"He is never late..." The man noticed something was different. No, something was off.

This was unlike their leader and that could only mean one thing.

"They are dead..." He muttered under his breath, the Specters were complacent with a lot of things but one thing they always took seriously was these gatherings.

They did so religiously, never once being late or taking anything for granted.

"What?" Bella asked, confused and deeming this a rather extreme verdict.

"He predicted this... This was why this meeting was called, to discuss his finding..." The dark-skinned man said before sitting back down.

Bella was surprised by how calm he sounded despite having just told her that the Specters might have been killed off.

"What do you mean?"Bella asked, realizing she was the only one not being kept in the loop.

"There has been a strange appearance of rocks that appeared out of nowhere, all the Specters have reported seeing something similar in their various settlements..." The man said and Bella’s jaw dropped.

"It seems like you know what I am talking about... We have deduced that these things appear close enough to populous areas to suck out the life from these settlements," The man said in the calmest voice known to humanity.

Bella was surprised by his composure but she was also surprised why there were so few people here.

"What do you mean suck it out?" Bella questioned this statement.

"Because that is how the other Specters fell. They couldn’t reach out to us in time and he decided to see what would happen," The man said.

"What the hell...? Are you saying he is dead? How can you be so sure!?" Bella barked and the man simply looked at her, his expression not even faltering for a second as he said.

"Because I am next..." The man said and this made Bella go into full panic mood as her eyes scanned the area for any threat.

"Relax, the fragment appeared but I don’t know what happened... It seems to be erratic and has grown a lot faster... I thought I would have more time," The man said, revealing a wound around his wrist but unlike the common trend with infected individuals because it was glowing pink.

"What is this?" Bella questioned but he was uncertain.

"I do not know, I was fine this morning but it appeared out of the blue. All I did was make contact with it," The man said and Bella realized that this would have been her fate if she touched the glowing fragment.

"I am afraid that this might be the fate of the other Specters but it looks like you were smarter than us," The man pointed out.

This was a lot for Bella to digest but it all made sense to an extent.

However, this would have been her fate if she touched the fragment but if this happened, why was a meeting? Potentially putting them all in danger?

It was clear that they didn’t take into consideration the effect of the fragments but who could have guessed something like this happening?

"I need you to stay here and watch what happens to me, " The man said, prompting Bella to move her chair further away from him because if these fragments did what he said they did then she was glad that she destroyed it.

Otherwise, there was no telling if her community would have survived but in reality, her saving grace was that it was in a cave.

If it was out in the open, it would have grown beyond that as there was now it wouldn’t come into contact with any living thing to strengthen in.

"And if I turn to one of them, put a bullet through my head. I don’t know how lucid I will be so here." The man said, handing her a handwritten note.

"Those are the words I will say to you to tell you it is still me in here. If I do not say them, kill me," This was strange, it was planned.

This wasn’t something he did on the spot and Bella finally realized.

"He wasn’t the one that called me here, was he, you were?" Bella asked to which the man nodded.

"That is right, everyone else is dead and I do not know the whereabouts of the one who leads us, I hoped this meeting would bring him here but his absence only confirmed one thing." He said and Bella realized that they were on the brink of doom but she agreed to help him as she too had never seen anything like this before. Little did they know, this was the beginning of the end.
