Chapter 315: Celeste is Back, The Magicless Guardian’s Items [1]

Celeste beamed with joy as she immediately rushed forward to hug Leon, pressing her head against his chest with an enthusiasm that nearly knocked him backward.

He could feel the warmth radiating off her body like a gentle fire.

"I woke up around a day ago and saw you unconscious on the ground, and no matter what I tried to do, I couldn’t wake you up no matter how hard I tried," Celeste explained, her voice muffled slightly against his chest, "I tried to exit this place afterward while carrying you with me, but some of the traps activated and I had to flee back here because they were far too strong for me to handle alone."

"I guess that means I was passed out for four days total," Leon nodded slowly as he did the math in his head, his hand still gently resting on Celeste’s back.

"That’s quite a long time to be unconscious, honestly more than I was expecting."

Leon was about to explain everything that had happened to the phoenix girl, wanting to fill her in on the details of the fight and the aftermath, but she simply shook her head and smiled up at him with knowing eyes.

"I could see everything happening around me while I was in my core form," she said warmly, "I watched the entire fight unfold, I saw you use that dangerous ability, and I saw you kill the guardian and pass out afterward."

"I saw it all from beginning to end."

"Well, that makes things easier then," Leon nodded, relieved that he didn’t have to recount the whole ordeal from scratch, because explaining everything would have taken quite a while and his head was still pounding.

At least it seemed like the [Magicless Core] hadn’t disintegrated Celeste’s phoenix core like he had feared, which would have actually killed her permanently.

She was alive and standing before him in all her glory, still wearing the same equipment she had been wearing back when Mathilde had killed her.

"The feeling of feeling my soul fade out like that was absolutely horrifying," Celeste shivered against him, her flames flickering slightly as she recalled the experience.

"It was terrifying in a way I cannot properly put into words, and more importantly, it seems like there are other ways to kill a phoenix besides soul attacks, which is something I never even considered before now."

Hearing that, Leon’s eyes widened as he realized the full implication of what she was saying, because he understood it now as well.

The [Magicless Guardian] hadn’t had any ability to use soul attacks whatsoever, and yet using the magicless core had allowed it to possibly kill a phoenix permanently if it had successfully absorbed their phoenix core completely.

It was an incredible and terrifying discovery, and if anyone who wanted to kill phoenixes ever learned about this method, they would absolutely make sure to use it against her without any hesitation whatsoever.

Leon quickly opened his [Storage Space] at that moment, pulling up the interface to check what items he had actually managed to loot from the guardian’s corpse, and his face immediately broke into a wide grin.

"Hah," he grinned with genuine satisfaction, "Everything should be fine now."

Leon’s eyes widened as he read through the entire list of loot, feeling extremely satisfied with everything he had managed to acquire from the fight.

Each and every item seemed incredibly useful in its own unique way and he could already think of several uses for most of them.

And then, right as he was finishing his inspection, another notification appeared before him that made his heart skip a beat with excitement.

Ding!

"Magicless Core," Leon said without any hesitation whatsoever, his voice firm and certain, "It’s the most useful one out of everything here, no question about it."

The item’s description had clearly stated that it didn’t work as intended anymore now that it had been separated from the guardian, but he was quite confident it would still be very useful for something, especially since it was an ascendant rank item.

Fwoosh!

Immediately the translucent purple hand that resembled space itself with tiny stars floating inside it came shooting out of Leon’s chest all at once and rushed directly toward the boss’s corpse, passing through it like it wasn’t even there at all.

After a few seconds of waiting, the hand retracted and brought back an item toward Leon that made him smile: another [Magicless Core] floating right there in front of him.

It was a completely transparent core roughly the size of a human head, and it emitted a subtle pressure that Leon could feel pressing against his skin like invisible hands.

The closer Leon brought it to his own body, the more drained he immediately felt from his Spirit stat, and even the flames at the tip of Celeste’s ponytails flickered and dimmed noticeably as the core approached her.

"That’s the thing that was going to kill me back there," Celeste said with a cold expression on her face, her eyes locked onto the core with a mixture of fear and hatred, "It’s completely twisted and wrong, I hate everything about it."

"It’s incredibly useful though," Leon grinned at her, turning the core over in his hands carefully, "It doesn’t fully work as intended anymore now that the guardian is dead, but it seems like its spirit draining capabilities are still present and functional, though much weaker than they probably were before."

And right after that, Leon focused his attention back on the other items he had acquired from the loot list.
